Ruben Bejarano Garcia (1935-2023)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ruben Bejarano Garcia on December 21st, 2023. He was a cherished brother, uncle, cousin, father, and grandfather, whose love for his family and his history was unparalleled. Ruben's journey of life came to a close at the age of 88. His presence will be deeply missed.

Ruben was born in Mountain View, California in 1935 to Alfredo and Soledad Garcia. From a young age, he embraced both his loved ones and the vibrant tapestry of his heritage. He shared an unbreakable bond with each member of his family, cherishing his brothers Alfred, Benny, and Robert, as well as his sisters Ophelia, Sally, Chris, Emma, Margie, and Grace. They were a source of joy and unity for him. Their gatherings became treasured moments of celebration that etched lifelong memories.

In high school at Mountain View High School, Ruben's athletic prowess shone brightly. Excelling in football, basketball, baseball, and track & field, he earned the affectionate nickname "Bugs" for his remarkable speed and agility. As life unfolded beyond those youthful days of triumphs on the field and the court, Ruben continued to embody dedication and determination in all endeavors.

For years thereafter, Ruben played semi-professional football for the San Jose Tigers while also graciously serving as a basketball referee. His commitment to creating safe spaces extended to Stanford University where he devoted over 28 years to security services. Additionally, Ruben embarked on a musical adventure as he owned a record store in Sunnyvale CA, a testament to his diverse passions.

Embracing education, Ruben earned a diploma from Mountain View High School, an Associate of Arts from San Jose City College, and a Bachelor of Science from San Jose State University. He further cultivated his knowledge and compassion by acquiring teaching credentials to support drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs within San Jose and Santa Clara County. His unwavering dedication led him to briefly serve in the US Army and ultimately become a beloved teacher within the San Jose Unified School District.

Ruben's legacy extends beyond his professional achievements. He leaves behind four children, Camille Torres, Ruben Garcia, Alice Aguiar, and Grace Sepulveda, who will hold cherished memories of their loving father close to their hearts. His enduring love was also passed down to 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, who were the apple of his eye. Ruben found solace in the presence of Tom, a feline companion who brought immense joy to his final chapter of life.

The depth of Ruben's zest for life was evident in his passions for Mexican food, steak, and banana splits. Exploring new places ignited his spirit, but he always felt most at home surrounded by dear relatives and friends. The resonance of mariachi melodies spoke directly to his soul.

As we bid farewell to Ruben, let us remember his resounding phrases: "Let's go eat," "Go 49ers," "Go SF Giants." He would often marvel at having lived a long life while acknowledging that every day was a precious gift. We are profoundly grateful for the incredible father he embodied, tirelessly reminding us all about the significance of family, culture, and history.

Ruben Bejarano Garcia will forever remain in our hearts as we revere his memory with reverence. His absence leaves an indelible void that can never be filled.
